Orientation: Why Introductions Matter
Introductions are often the first step in a conversation. You may introduce yourself at work, in a class, at a doctor’s office, in a store, or when meeting a neighbor.
In this module, you will learn short, useful English phrases. Do not worry about speaking perfectly. The goal is to communicate clearly and politely.
Key Phrases for Basic Introductions
Study these common phrases. The Spanish translation is included to help you understand the meaning.
- Hello. = Hola.
- Hi. = Hola. Informal, common in everyday conversation.
- Good morning. = Buenos días.
- Good afternoon. = Buenas tardes.
- Good evening. = Buenas noches, when greeting someone at night.
- My name is Ana. = Mi nombre es Ana.
- I am Ana. = Soy Ana.
- What is your name? = ¿Cómo te llamas? / ¿Cuál es su nombre?
- Nice to meet you. = Mucho gusto.
- Where are you from? = ¿De dónde eres? / ¿De dónde es usted?
- I am from Mexico. = Soy de México.
Explanation: Two Simple Introduction Patterns
You can introduce yourself using two common patterns:
Pattern 1: My name is + name.
Example: My name is Carlos.
Pattern 2: I am + name.
Example: I am Carlos.
Both are correct. My name is... is slightly more formal. I am... is simple and common.
Realistic Example: Meeting a Coworker
Situation: You are starting a new job and meeting a coworker.
Maria: Hello. My name is Maria.
James: Hi, Maria. I’m James. Nice to meet you.
Maria: Nice to meet you, too.
James: Where are you from?
Maria: I’m from Colombia.
Practice: Build Your Introduction
- Choose a greeting: “Hello,” “Hi,” “Good morning,” or “Good afternoon.”
- Say your name: “My name is ___” or “I’m ___.”
- Add a polite phrase: “Nice to meet you.”
- If appropriate, say where you are from: “I’m from ___.”
- Practice the full introduction out loud three times.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not say I have 30 years for age. Say I am 30 years old. Age is not necessary in a basic introduction.
- Do not translate mucho gusto word for word. In English, say Nice to meet you.
- Use from for place: I’m from Guatemala, not I’m of Guatemala.
