How the instructor experience works

Your instructor journey generally follows a simple path: apply, complete review, receive assignments, teach and keep learning records current, earn, and get paid through OwlPay.

1. Apply

Tell us about your professional and teaching experience, credentials, subject areas, preferred formats, learner groups, availability, and course or WE² ideas.

A resume or CV can help GigCourses understand your experience. Submitting an application starts review; it does not automatically create an assignment or guarantee paid work.

2. Complete review

GigCourses reviews applicants based on the needs of the course, program, learner population, and opportunity. Review may include experience, qualifications, availability, delivery preferences, geographic scope, interests, and readiness to follow privacy, security, safety, and professional standards.

3. Receive assignments

Once approved, your instructor profile can be connected to your account and approved scope. Individual teaching engagements and assignments are offered separately.

4. Teach and record progress

Deliver scheduled Meetings, work with Course or Class materials, record attendance, review submissions, enter grades or progress, communicate delivery issues, and protect learner information.

Your instructor dashboard

Approved instructors receive access to a workspace built around their assignments. Depending on your role and current work, it may include:

  • Teaching Workspace
  • Meeting Calendar
  • Assigned Classes
  • AI Authoring & Credits
  • Earnings & OwlPay
  • WE² Review Queue
  • Development Opportunities
  • Instructor Profile
  • GigCourses Resources

Your workspace only shows the tools and records relevant to your approved access and assignments.

Courses

Reusable learning offerings and curriculum that can support more than one delivery.

Classes

Specific deliveries of a Course, with learners, schedule, pricing, staffing, and operating context.

Meetings

Individual scheduled teaching events that make up a Class, with attendance and delivery records tied to the right context.

Teach and keep learning records current

Teaching records are important academically and operationally. They can also be part of the evidence used to determine when compensation has been earned.

  • Deliver scheduled Meetings.
  • Work with assigned Course or Class materials.
  • Record attendance.
  • Review assignments and submissions.
  • Enter grades or learner progress.
  • Communicate schedule or delivery issues.
  • Protect learner information and GigCourses materials.

A compensation rule may depend on learner payment, Meeting completion, attendance, progress, or another documented milestone.

Create and manage content with Google Workspace

Some instructors may receive access to GigCourses authoring tools using Google Sheets and Google Docs while GigCourses remains the system of record.

  1. Connect your instructor workspace.
  2. Import or refresh assigned records.
  3. Make supported edits in Sheets or linked Docs.
  4. Validate your changes.
  5. Review any conflicts.
  6. Sync approved changes back to GigCourses.

The platform can also support instructor-scoped Google Workspace connections for assigned content and WE² review workflows.

How instructor compensation works

Compensation is connected to the specific work you are assigned and the terms that apply to that assignment. Depending on the program, it may include:

  • Direct Class or Meeting teaching.
  • Commission-based compensation.
  • Approved hourly compensation.
  • Hybrid compensation.
  • Curriculum or Module royalties.
  • Course or Program-level commissions.
  • WE² review compensation.

Your exact method, rate, earning conditions, and payment basis come from the compensation terms associated with the work you are assigned. Approval as an instructor does not automatically create earnings.

From teaching to payment

Projected — An estimate of potential future earnings.

Earned — The applicable work or milestone has been completed.

Held — An earning exists, but another requirement or exception still needs to be resolved.

Payable / Available — The earning has been made available through OwlPay.

Processing — The payout is moving through the payment process.

Paid — Settlement has been confirmed.

Payable does not mean Paid. A payable amount is available within the payout process, while a payment is only considered complete after settlement has been confirmed.

Getting paid with OwlPay

GigCourses calculates instructor compensation from the applicable assignment, compensation rules, learner-payment information, and required teaching evidence. Once an eligible positive amount is ready, the payee-ready amount is sent to OwlPay, the payout and settlement system.

  • Payee profile
  • Payout-method setup
  • Available payout balance
  • Payout requests
  • Payment-provider status
  • Settlement history

Sensitive financial information such as bank credentials should be entered only through the approved payout-provider workflow—not through the public instructor application.

Estimate your instructor income

Explore a combined illustrative example for class delivery and WE² assessment work. Class time uses meetings and hours per class meeting; WE² earnings remain included while exam time is modeled as zero under the auto-grading assumption. Actual compensation varies by assignment, program, and approved terms.

WE² assessments

Illustrative estimate before taxes, fees, preparation time, refunds, or other assignment-specific adjustments. Class tuition is modeled once per monthly class section, not once per meeting. Hourly estimate uses class meeting time only; WE² exam time is modeled as 0 hours under the auto-grading assumption.

Estimated instructor share

$1,249.65/ month

1 active class x 8 meetings / month x 2 hours + 5 WE² exams x 50 test takers / month, using 50% average commission. Class time: 16 hours / month; WE² exam time: 0 hours.

Class share / month$999.90
WE² share / month$249.75
Average earn / hour$78.10
Annualized$14,995.80
Class delivery contribution$999.90
WE² assessment contribution$249.75

Both channels use a 50% average commission assumption; actual approved terms may differ.

Your earnings dashboard

The Earnings & OwlPay area of your workspace can help you understand where an earning came from and where it is in the payout process.

Depending on the earning, you may be able to see:

  • The related Class or Meeting
  • The compensation method
  • Gross earnings
  • Applicable deductions
  • Net earnings
  • Module or other royalty amounts
  • OwlPay balance and references
  • Current payout status

Our goal is to make instructor compensation traceable back to the work and source records that created it.

Instructor opportunities, assignments, compensation, eligibility requirements, and payout terms vary by program and engagement. Approval as an instructor does not guarantee a particular assignment, learner count, rate, or amount of compensation.

Privacy and security

Instructor access is scoped to the work you are authorized to perform.

Learner contact information, submissions, grades, attendance, and internal GigCourses materials should only be accessed and used for assigned educational work.

Public instructor profiles are separate from private onboarding, payout, agreement, and learner information. Only information intentionally designated for your public profile should be visible to learners.

Frequently asked questions

Here are a few common questions about teaching with GigCourses.

Does approval guarantee teaching work?

No. Approval gives you a GigCourses instructor profile and approved access scope. Individual teaching engagements and assignments are offered separately.

Can I propose a new course or topic?

Yes. You can share interest in existing courses and WE² opportunities, as well as a new or other proposal when your idea does not fit an existing offering.

Do I have to teach only in person?

Not necessarily. Delivery-format preferences and available opportunities depend on the applicable course, school, and program.

When do I start earning?

Earnings depend on your specific assignment and compensation rule. The applicable payment, delivery, attendance, progress, approval, or other required gates must be satisfied before compensation becomes earned or payable.

Where do I enter my banking information?

Payout information should be completed through OwlPay or its approved payout-provider onboarding process. The public instructor application should not collect bank credentials, payment-provider secrets, Social Security numbers, or equivalent financial identifiers.
