Class Description

Primary focus: This opening class builds a friendly foundation for English-speaking beginners by introducing Tagalog pronunciation, greetings, courteous language, self-introductions, and basic cultural context for respectful everyday interaction.

Schedule: Thursday, August 6, 2026, 6:00–8:00 p.m.; Tuesday, August 11, 2026, 6:00–8:00 p.m.

Workload: 4 instructor-led hours plus 4 independent assignment hours, for 8 total learner-workload hours.

Class-level learning objectives: By the end of this class, learners will be able to pronounce common Tagalog vowels and beginner sound patterns intelligibly; recognize stress and glottal-stop awareness in simple words; use greetings, thanks, yes/no, and polite forms such as po and opo; introduce themselves using phrases such as Ako si… = “I am…” and ask simple name/origin questions such as Taga-saan ka? = “Where are you from?”; and participate in a brief courteous exchange.

Key language: Magandang umaga = “Good morning,” Magandang gabi = “Good evening,” Kumusta? = “How are you?,” Kumusta po kayo? = “How are you?” polite/formal, Salamat = “Thank you,” Walang anuman = “You’re welcome,” Oo/Opo = “Yes/Yes, respectfully,” Hindi = “No,” Ako si… = “I am…,” Ano ang pangalan mo? = “What is your name?,” Taga-saan ka? = “Where are you from?,” Mabuti = “Good,” and Paalam = “Goodbye.”

Instructional approach: Instructor modeling, call-and-response pronunciation drills, listening discrimination, pair practice, short guided dialogues, reading mini-dialogues, writing a short introduction, and supportive feedback. Grammar and culture are explained in accessible English with immediate speaking practice.

Assignments: After each meeting, learners complete a practical 2-hour assignment. Assignment 1 focuses on pronunciation and greeting practice with a short audio or written reflection. Assignment 2 focuses on preparing and practicing a four-line self-introduction and brief courteous dialogue.

Completion criteria: Learners complete both meetings and assignments, demonstrate effortful pronunciation practice, use polite expressions appropriately, and produce a short understandable self-introduction or greeting exchange. Assessment emphasizes participation, completion, clarity, and confidence rather than fluency.
